Theory
Wesley Earl Craven believes that all horrors are more effective and less obvious if they take place in a stereotypical safe place therefore he chooses to set his horrors in places such as family homes, hospitals, schools etc. - anywhere which is looked safe today. These type of places an audience wouldn't think but horror goes on. This is why his movies were so good because it caught the audience of guard. He also uses the theory that there is usually an absence of parents in the characters life and most certainly within the film. This is because the parents represent an added dimension of safety.

Example - A Nightmare On Elm Street (1984)
A Nightmare on Elm Street (1984) is a good example of Wesley Earl Craven’s theory because they take place in houses with families and you wouldn't expect anything bad to go wrong in this street. There has been a secret kept from the children long time ago and Freddy Krueger goes into the children’s dreams and kills them.

Example - The Conjuring (2013)
The Conjuring (2013) is another good example of Wesley Earl Craven’s theory because it takes place in a farmhouse where you would think is safe because it has animals and in the middle of nowhere where nothing could go wrong but unfortunately it does in this film. This gives it that extra touch for this film because the family are isolated in the middle of nowhere and they have this problem. They have to face head on.
